I took a look at the Snorton last night. Intersting concept, but I don't think I'd pay the $10000 base price for one. I used to ride a Feather bed framed Norton. While it was a decent toy, I don't think I'd want to put a Savage motor in one.
As far as the mods listed, $160 for a Mikuni carb isn't bad. The Keihins for Lisa's Rebel are a lot higher than that, aren't half the carb the Mikuni is, and don't work for s**t. You can't beat the price on the muffler either. I think I would probably have my cylinder head reworked and run a 42mm Mikuni or a Carl's Speed Shop Typhoon. More fuel, rather than less, generally means more power. However, the stock combustion chamber on the Savage is set for a lean mix, and the flow of a 36mm unit may be just about ight. Get ahold of Thunder Road again, and ask if tey have dyno sheets comparing the 650 with the stock carb and their 36mm conversion. That's the only way to really tel if the money would be well spent.
Like I replied to the "more oomph" query, the power range of the motor is finite. You can only get so much out of a mill that was never designed to be a stump pulling, low end power house. If the only reason for swapping the carb is to run a better breathing air cleaner, ther is an easier way. Have a sheet metal shop build you a new battery box to fit where the stock air cleaner assembly resides. Have the fornt cout out of the original battery box. Go to Auto Zone, Shucks, PEP bOYS, OR WHOEVER YOUR LOCAL CHEAP PARTS STORE IS. Get a four inch air filter and air cleaner housing. Use a band type clamp to install it in place f the rubber boot that connected the carb to the air box. End of air flow problem.
